Now I know that I'm neither Chinese by birth or residency or naturalization or in any other way. Neither do I speak fluent Mandarin or Cantonese.
I did spend 4 months in China for an exchange semester and traveled a bit (not only to city cities but also smaller towns and a couple rural areas). I also developed fairly close friendship with fellow Chinese students.
I asked them the same question.
